Kokonotsuido, a restaurant for soba and Japanese cuisine in Setagaya.
This is near the shopping mall by my girlfriend’s home, so it is somewhere we go when we suddenly feel like having a good dinner. This was our second visit. Although it is part of a restaurant group, it feels like an upscale neighborhood establishment. It is inside a building, but the traditional interior has been so thoughtfully done that I have become very fond of it.
Kokonotsuido’s Tamagawa branch suits anyone looking for a relaxed meal in a traditional Japanese setting. It is in the basement of Tamagawa Takashimaya’s East Building, yet its interior incorporates a house more than a century old, relocated from Kamakura. That distinctive atmosphere within a shopping complex is its greatest appeal. At the regular tables, you can enjoy handmade soba and seasonal dishes; private rooms offer courses centered around a hearth.
Soba and tempura look like a good place to start. Visitor accounts include positive comments about soba paired with kakiage, and many diners add rolled omelet or seasonal à la carte dishes. The menu accommodates both a simple soba meal and an unhurried occasion with several dishes.
Price impression: A splurge.
