OCTO, a Mediterranean restaurant in Okinawa.

She really wanted to visit this restaurant, so we made our way to Kouri Island. Both the interior and exterior were beautiful, but we arrived late and were so hungry that neither of us had the spare attention to enjoy taking photographs. Fortunately, I did remember to photograph the food. Please check Google Maps for the views I missed.

At OCTO, Okinawan ingredients take on another character when they meet Mediterranean cooking.

This Mediterranean grill restaurant is located in BATON SUITE Okinawa Kouri Island. Through its large windows, you can look out over the island’s blue sea.

Ingredients and fire are at the heart of the cooking. Okinawan and Ryukyuan produce, together with selected ingredients from across Japan, is cooked on a charcoal grill by Spain’s Josper, while pizzas are baked in a dedicated stone oven. Drawing on the food cultures of Italy, southern France, Spain, and other Mediterranean regions, the restaurant offers a fresh interpretation of island ingredients.

The open sea view and open kitchen also help define the experience. You can shift your attention from the scenery outside to the preparation of the food, making it a setting that encourages an unhurried meal.

Keep it in mind if you are driving around Kouri Island and want a meal that brings scenery and food together. It suits anyone interested in discovering Okinawan flavors from a different perspective.

Price impression: A splurge.
