Jingisukan Yohachi, a place for grilled lamb in Sangenjaya, Tokyo.

One evening, I was reminded of the jingisukan we had eaten in Hokkaido, our first travel destination together. I asked her to take me to a place that locals go to. Once again, she said she knew somewhere good, and we headed to Jingisukan Yohachi. The queue was not long, but the restaurant was bustling, as you would expect of a popular spot.

The Sangenjaya branch is worth considering if you enjoy lamb and a lively atmosphere. Its tender meat and relatively approachable lamb aroma are often cited as strengths. It could appeal both to lamb lovers and to those trying it for the first time.

You can compare lamb and mutton, as well as cuts such as tongue and skirt. The sogen-yaki, grilled with crown daisy, butter, and a salt-based sauce, looks like an interesting option when you want a change from the standard grill. A budget of around ¥4,000–¥6,000 per person, including extra meat and drinks, seems a reasonable guide.

As with many jingisukan restaurants, however, there is plenty of smoke, which affects comfort. Wear clothes you do not mind picking up cooking smells. The busy setting is better suited to casual meat and drinks with friends than to quiet conversation or a formal meal. For me, the appeal of the food makes the smoke worth putting up with. If you like lamb and do not mind a lively room, this is a place to consider.

Price impression: Moderate.
