Jingisukan Yohachi, a lamb barbecue restaurant in Sangenjaya, Tokyo.
One evening, I was thinking of the jingisukan we had eaten in Hokkaido, the destination of our first trip together. Once again, I asked her to take me to a place where locals eat it. She said she knew a good one and brought me to Yohachi. The queue was not very long, but the restaurant was bustling, as you would expect of a popular spot.
Yohachi's Sangenjaya branch is worth considering if you enjoy lamb and a lively atmosphere. Tender meat and a relatively approachable lamb aroma are among its strengths. It is an option not only for lamb lovers but also for those trying it for the first time.
Another attraction is the chance to compare lamb and mutton and try cuts such as tongue and skirt. Sogen-yaki, with lamb and garland chrysanthemum grilled in butter and a salt-based sauce, looks like a good choice for a different flavor from the standard barbecue. Allowing around ¥4,000–¥6,000 per person, including extra meat and drinks, would be a reasonable estimate.
As with jingisukan restaurants generally, the smoke makes the room less comfortable. It can cling to clothes, so I suggest wearing something casual. The busy atmosphere is better suited to meat and drinks with friends than to quiet conversation or a formal meal. To me, the food's appeal makes the inconvenience of the smoke worthwhile. If you like lamb and do not mind a lively setting, it is worth a visit.
Price impression: Moderate.
