Kokonotsuido, a place for soba and Japanese cooking in Setagaya.

It is around the shopping mall near my girlfriend's home, so we go when we suddenly feel like having something delicious for dinner. This was our second visit. Although it is part of a restaurant group, it feels like an upscale local restaurant. It is inside a building, but I love how thoughtfully the interior evokes a traditional Japanese setting.

Kokonotsuido's Tamagawa branch suits a leisurely meal in a traditional Japanese space. It is in the basement of the East Building at Tamagawa Takashimaya, yet its interior incorporates a house more than a century old that was relocated from Kamakura. That unusual atmosphere within a shopping complex is its greatest attraction. At regular tables, you can enjoy handmade soba and seasonal dishes; in private rooms, courses are served around a hearth.

Soba and tempura are a good place to start. Reviews from diners who paired soba with kakiage are positive, and many also order rolled omelet and seasonal dishes. The menu makes the restaurant versatile, whether you want a simple bowl of soba or a leisurely meal with several dishes.

Price impression: A splurge.
