Matsubara-an, a soba restaurant in Kamakura, Kanagawa. Although it is not administratively part of Tokyo, I have kept it in the same category as it is within the greater metropolitan area.
The weather was so lovely that I wanted to go somewhere, and on impulse I suggested visiting a filming location from the drama ‘Can This Love Be Translated?’, which I had been wanting to see. She agreed and told me the area was already a popular sightseeing destination. Matsubara-an was the soba restaurant she said we absolutely had to visit while there. There was a long queue that day too. But her choices had always been right, so I did not feel irritated. The stylish setting gave us plenty to look at and made the wait enjoyable. We could even watch the noodles being made by hand and see how they came together.
Matsubara-an in Kamakura is a restaurant where the atmosphere is as much a part of the experience as the soba. The interior of an old house, the terrace, and the separate building tucked into the garden can make the meal itself a scene from your trip.
The menu centers on soba, with a broad selection of seasonal dishes, sake, and wine. It suits a leisurely visit with a few dishes alongside the noodles rather than simply finishing a quick bowl. Adding dishes and drinks can, however, push up the bill, so it is worth considering your order.
Overall, Matsubara-an is an appealing option for travelers who value a traditional setting and a variety of dishes. It is worth considering if you want mealtime to feel like part of your Kamakura journey.
Price impression: Moderate.
